A Change of Air by Anthony Hope
The Story
A good, law-abiding man goes to France to rest, but we know trouble is coming. Mr. Dale is a patent agent—a guy who never runs, never shouts. He recently came into money and buys a quiet house, thinking nothing exciting will happen. But when his sleep is disturbed not by crickets, but by a dead body, he’s suddenly guilty until proven innocent. The girl he befriends is in danger, too—her cousin is dead, and she’s found at the scene. But Dale is weirdly uneasy, drawn into a net of clues and art collectors and family secrets. The detective? Not a professional—Dale must become a real man, with nerves and a sneaking sense the dead man’s wealth hides yet more bad blood. And the road to discovery shakes his quietness loose, for good.
Why You Should Read It
I worry that books with 'perfect' men are boring, but Dale is anything but boring here. We see him faking calm while his heart races. That’s the charm: the ordinary hero. You connect with someone who is outside his zone—who needs tips to survive lies, police, and hidden gold. Trust me—being a little scared (like Dale) makes the story come alive. I had creased pages from leaning in fast. The themes of change—the title’s promise—are giant but smart: Dale discovers more pity for money. A change of air from his old life… also a person change. You cannot find one fake line.
Final Verdict
A 'A Change of Air' skillfully delivers a low-boil mystery poured into holiday clothes. Instead of grim corridors, you get sunshine, beautiful views, and even a flirt—but suspense lurks underneath. This gem sits in my top 'books I loved' jar. Fans of lighter Christie-style yarns—look no further. Also great if you had a week where you repeat 'Nothing happens in my life'. Buy it. Accept the shiver. Know that sudden wealth just might ruin your Saturday—if it sets you like a detective.
