How the progress estimate works

The Reading tool gives you a realistic estimate of how long it will take to finish a book. The catalog's median reading time is 293 minutes, which is about 5 hours. This estimate assumes a steady pace of roughly 230 words per minute.

Keep in mind that your own pace may vary. The tool shows the estimate for each book, and you can adjust the reading speed to match your habits. The catalog includes a range of lengths, from quick reads to marathon books, so you can pick one that fits your schedule.

Quick Reads

8 titles are estimated to take under 2 hours, perfect for a single sitting.

Steady Reads

22 titles fall between 2 and 4 hours, a good choice for an afternoon.

Immersive Reads

59 titles take 4 to 8 hours, offering a more involved experience.

Marathon Reads

10 titles exceed 8 hours, for those ready to commit to a longer journey.

Planning Your Reading Progress

The queen of the isle — A Closer Reading

Once you have selected a mystery, the Reading Tracker helps you turn that choice into a sustainable plan. The tracker records progress in pages, not minutes or chapters, and lets you set a daily page goal. It estimates your total pages based on word count and a standard of 250 words per page, but you can adjust that to match your own edition.

For a longer title like The queen of the isle — A Closer Reading, which weighs in at 114,004 words, the default estimate would be around 457 pages. With the default daily goal of 20 pages, that would take roughly 23 days to finish. But you can adjust the goal to fit your schedule—say, 30 pages a day would shorten that to about 16 days.

Setting a Realistic Daily Goal

The tracker’s key input is your daily page goal. The current interface defaults to 20 pages, but you can raise or lower it. A lower goal, like 10 pages, might be more sustainable if you have limited reading time, while a higher goal can accelerate your progress. The estimated finish days update accordingly: for The queen of the isle — A Closer Reading, 10 pages a day would take about 46 days, while 40 pages a day would take about 12.

It is wise to start with a goal you can keep consistently, rather than an ambitious one that might lead to burnout. The tracker’s history is stored in your browser, so you can see your progress over time and adjust as needed.

Adjusting the Page Count

The initial page estimate is based on a 250-words-per-page assumption, but your actual edition may differ. If you are using an e-reader or a print version with a different page count, you can replace the total with the number shown by your reading app. This ensures the remaining time estimate is accurate.

For example, if your edition of The queen of the isle — A Closer Reading has 500 pages, the estimated remaining time would be calculated as estimated_minutes × remaining_pages / total_pages. With a daily goal of 20 pages, that would be 500/20 = 25 days. The tracker does the math for you, so you can see how changes affect your finish date.

Tracking Without an Account

The Reading Tracker requires no account; it stores your progress in your browser’s localStorage. This means your data stays on your device, and you can use the tracker without any setup. It is a simple, private way to monitor your reading.

For a book like The queen of the isle — A Closer Reading, having a tracker can help you maintain momentum through its longer stretches. By setting a daily goal and checking off pages, you turn a large task into manageable steps. The tracker is not about speed; it is about consistency, and it can adapt to whatever pace works for you.
